René Goscinny & Sempé
Today is the first day of school. Mum woke me up really early and made me put on a brand-new shirt. I didn't want to go to school at all, but Mum said I was going to see all my friends again — and right then I felt happy.
Today is class-photo day. The teacher told us to come well-combed and well-dressed. Mum stuck me in a suit with a tie. I really didn't like the tie because it pinched my neck and I couldn't even swallow properly.
Alceste is my best friend. He's round and he eats all the time. Really all the time. At breaktime he eats bread and jam. During class he eats biscuits in secret. And even when he's asleep, I'm pretty sure he dreams he's eating.
Agnan is top of the class and the teacher's pet. We don't really like him because he tells on everybody. But we can't hit him, because he wears glasses, and the teacher says you should never hit someone with glasses.
Today, after school, we decided to play football on the wasteland. The wasteland is a brilliant place, full of dirt, stones, an old broken car and lots of tall weeds. It's better than a real stadium, I swear.
Today is my birthday! I'm seven years old. Mum made an enormous chocolate cake with seven candles on top, and she invited all my friends round for tea. I was absolutely thrilled.
Next to our place there's a wasteland. It's our favourite spot. The grown-ups say it's ugly, but we think it's the most beautiful place in the world. There's an old car with no wheels, bits of wood, stones, and tons of hiding places.
Today, our teacher wasn't in. She was sick. Instead we had a substitute. The substitute was young and looked nice. But we knew right away that this was a golden opportunity to have some fun.
