روزی روزگاری، خرگوشی تندپا در جنگل زندگی میکرد. او همیشه به همه پُز میداد که سریعترین حیوانِ جنگل است.
Once upon a time, there was a swift hare who lived in the forest. He always boasted to everyone that he was the fastest animal in the woods.
یک روز، خرگوش لاکپشتی را دید که بهآرامی روی جاده راه میرفت. خرگوش خندید و گفت: «چقدر کند راه میروی، لاکپشتِ پیر!»
One day, the hare saw a tortoise walking slowly along the road. The hare laughed and said, "How slowly you walk, old tortoise!"
لاکپشت با لبخندی آرام گفت: «شاید کند باشم، اما حاضرم با تو مسابقه بدهم.» خرگوش از خنده روی زمین افتاد. «مسابقه با من؟ باشد، قبول!»
The tortoise smiled gently and said, "I may be slow, but I am ready to race you." The hare fell on the ground laughing. "A race with me? Alright, I accept!"
روبَهِ پیرِ جنگل داورِ مسابقه شد. خط را روی زمین کشید و گفت: «هر کس زودتر به آن درختِ بلوط برسد، برنده است.»
The old fox of the forest became the judge. He drew a line on the ground and said, "Whoever reaches that oak tree first is the winner."
مسابقه شروع شد. خرگوش مثل بادْ پرید و از لاکپشت دور شد. لاکپشت همانطور آرام و یکنواخت قدم میزد.
The race began. The hare leaped like the wind and quickly left the tortoise behind. The tortoise kept walking at his slow, steady pace.
خرگوش که خیلی جلو افتاده بود، با خودش گفت: «من که خیلی سریعترم. کمی زیرِ این درخت میخوابم تا لاکپشت برسد، بعد دوباره میدوم.»
The hare, far ahead, said to himself, "I am so much faster. I will take a little nap under this tree, and when the tortoise catches up, I will run again."
خرگوش خوابش برد و خوابِ شیرینی دید. در همین مدت، لاکپشت آرام و بیوقفه راه میرفت و رفت و رفت...
The hare fell asleep and dreamed sweet dreams. Meanwhile, the tortoise kept walking, slow but steady, on and on and on...
وقتی خرگوش بیدار شد، چشمهایش از تعجب گرد شد. لاکپشت فقط چند قدم با درختِ بلوط فاصله داشت! خرگوش تندتر از همیشه دوید، اما دیر شده بود.
When the hare woke up, his eyes went wide with surprise. The tortoise was only a few steps from the oak tree! The hare ran faster than ever, but it was too late.
لاکپشت با لبخندِ مهربانش به درخت رسید و برندهی مسابقه شد. روبَه گفت: «آرام و پایدار، همیشه برنده میشود.»
With his kind smile, the tortoise reached the tree and won the race. The fox said, "Slow and steady always wins."
از آن روز به بعد، خرگوش و لاکپشت دوستانِ خوبی شدند. خرگوش یاد گرفت که از کسی پُز ندهد و لاکپشت یاد گرفت که هیچوقت تلاش را رها نکند.
From that day on, the hare and the tortoise became good friends. The hare learned never to boast, and the tortoise learned never to give up.
