در کنارِ جنگلی بزرگ، خواهر و برادری زندگی میکردند به نامهای هانسل و گرتل. آنها در خانهای کوچک با پدرشان زندگی میکردند و خیلی همدیگر را دوست داشتند.
Beside a great forest, a brother and sister named Hansel and Gretel lived in a small cottage with their father. They loved each other dearly.
یک روز، هانسل و گرتل برای جمعآوریِ توتفرنگی به جنگل رفتند. آنقدر سرگرمِ بازی شدند که نفهمیدند چقدر دور شدهاند.
One day, Hansel and Gretel went into the forest to gather strawberries. They got so caught up playing that they did not notice how far they had wandered.
وقتی خواستند برگردند، راه را پیدا نکردند. هانسل گفت: «نترس گرتل، با هم راه را پیدا میکنیم.» اما هرچه گشتند، فقط درخت و درخت بود.
When they tried to go back, they could not find the way. Hansel said, "Don't be afraid, Gretel, we will find the way together." But however much they searched, there were only trees and more trees.
پرندهی سفید و قشنگی پیدا شد و جلویشان پرواز کرد. هانسل و گرتل دنبالِ او رفتند تا به جاینمایی شگفتانگیز رسیدند.
A beautiful white bird appeared and flew before them. Hansel and Gretel followed it until they came to a most wonderful sight.
در میانِ درختها، خانهای ایستاده بود از نان و کیک، با پنجرههایی از شکر و دری از شکلات. روی بام، آبنباتهای رنگارنگ مثل ستاره میدرخشید.
Among the trees stood a house made of bread and cake, with windows of sugar and a door of chocolate. On the roof, colourful candies shone like stars.
هانسل و گرتل با خنده و شوق کمی از خانه را چشیدند. ناگهان درِ شکلاتی باز شد و پیرزنِ کوچکی با لبخندِ پهنی بیرون آمد.
Hansel and Gretel laughed and joyfully tasted a little of the house. Suddenly, the chocolate door opened and a small old woman with a wide smile came out.
اما این پیرزن کمی بدخلق بود و دوست نداشت کسی از خانهاش بخورد. او بچهها را به اتاقی برد و در را قفل کرد و گفت: «همینجا بمانید!»
But this old woman was a bit grumpy and did not like anyone eating her house. She took the children to a room, locked the door, and said, "Stay right here!"
گرتل که دختری زرنگ بود، نقشهای کشید. وقتی پیرزن مشغولِ پختنِ کیک شد، گرتل از سوراخِ کلیدْ کلید را با چوبی هل داد و در را باز کرد.
Gretel, a clever girl, made a plan. While the old woman was busy baking a cake, Gretel pushed the key out of the keyhole with a stick and opened the door.
هانسل و گرتل با هم دست به دست دادند و آرام از خانه بیرون آمدند. در حیاط، یک گنجشک کوچک به آنها راه را نشان داد.
Hand in hand, Hansel and Gretel quietly slipped out of the house. In the yard, a little sparrow showed them the way.
بچهها از جنگل دویدند و دویدند تا به رودخانه رسیدند. اردکِ مهربانی روی آب بود و آنها را یکییکی به آن طرفِ آب رساند.
The children ran and ran through the forest until they reached a river. A kind duck on the water carried them, one at a time, to the other side.
پدر که از غصهی گمشدنِ بچهها اشک میریخت، وقتی صدای آنها را شنید، با دو دویدن از خانه بیرون آمد و بچهها را در آغوش گرفت.
Their father, who had been weeping from sorrow at the loss of his children, ran out of the house when he heard their voices and threw his arms around them.
از آن روز به بعد، هانسل و گرتل دیگر هیچوقت در جنگل گم نشدند و همیشه با شجاعت و کمک به همدیگر، خوشحال زندگی کردند.
From that day on, Hansel and Gretel never got lost in the forest again, and with bravery and helping one another, they lived happily.
