کلاغِ سیاهی که تازه تکهی بزرگی پنیر پیدا کرده بود، روی شاخهی بلندِ درخت نشست و خوشحال نگاهش میکرد.
A black crow who had just found a big piece of cheese sat on a tall branch and gazed at it happily.
روباهِ زیرکی از زیرِ درخت میگذشت. بوی پنیر در باد پیچید و روباه سرش را بالا گرفت. «بهبه! چه پنیرِ خوشبویی!»
A clever fox was passing under the tree. The scent of cheese drifted in the wind, and the fox lifted his head. "Oh my! What a fragrant cheese!"
روباه با صدای شیرین گفت: «سلام، کلاغخانم! چه پرهای براقی داری! مثلِ آینه میدرخشد.» کلاغ کمی شانهاش را صاف کرد.
The fox said sweetly, "Hello, Madam Crow! What shiny feathers you have! They sparkle like a mirror." The crow puffed up her shoulders a little.
روباه ادامه داد: «و این چشمهای هوشمندت! حتماً صدایت هم زیبا است. ای کاش میتوانستم یک آوازِ تو را بشنوم.»
The fox continued, "And those clever eyes! Surely your voice must be beautiful too. Oh, how I wish I could hear one of your songs."
کلاغ که از تعریفها خوشش آمده بود، دلش خواست برای روباه بخواند. اما درست همان لحظه که منقارش را باز کرد، پنیر افتاد!
The crow, pleased by the compliments, wanted to sing for the fox. But the very moment she opened her beak, the cheese fell!
روباه با خنده پنیر را قاپید. «ممنونم، کلاغخانم! بهترین پنیرِ زندگیم را به من دادی.» و خواست برود.
The fox snatched the cheese with a laugh. "Thank you, Madam Crow! You have given me the best cheese of my life." And he was about to leave.
کلاغ که از کارش پشیمان شده بود، با ناراحتی گفت: «اِی! گول خوردم. تعریفهای تو همه ترفند بود.»
The crow, regretting her mistake, said sadly, "Oh! I was tricked. All your praise was a ruse."
روباه ایستاد. به کلاغِ غمگین نگاه کرد و دلش سوخت. گفت: «راست میگویی. ببخش که با چاپلوسی پنیرت را گرفتم.»
The fox stopped. He looked at the sad crow and felt sorry. He said, "You are right. Forgive me for taking your cheese with flattery."
روباه پنیر را دو نیم کرد و نیمی از آن را بالای درخت پیشِ کلاغ گذاشت. «بیا با هم بخوریم. دوستیْ از پنیر هم خوشمزهتر است.»
The fox cut the cheese in half and placed half on top of the tree for the crow. "Let us share. Friendship is even tastier than cheese."
کلاغ یاد گرفت که به حرفهای گولزننده گوش نسپارد، و روباه یاد گرفت که زرنگی بدونِ مهربانی، خوشمزه نیست. آن روز هر دو با لبخند خانه رفتند.
The crow learned not to listen to deceitful words, and the fox learned that cleverness without kindness is not tasty. That day, both went home smiling.
